Tired of hitting the gym routinely and still having to battle with your “belly” or “spare tire”? These areas are tough to lose. Unfortunately, as we age, we have to exercise harder and eat healthier just to maintain our weight, which makes slimming-down even harder.

Liposuction, sometimes referred to as “lipo” can help sculpt, slim and reshape specific areas of the body, improving body contours and proportion. The procedure is extremely popular, straightforward, and highly effective at eliminating fat deposits resistant to diet and exercise. Dr. Terry Maffi is a board-certified Paradise Valley plastic surgeon and will complete a body assessment based on your personal goals. Liposuction Surgery Questions

The most common areas for men to address with liposuction are the abdomen (your “belly”) and flanks (“love handles” or “spare tire”). Liposuction of the chest, back, outer and inner thighs and arms can also be performed.

VASOR liposuction uses a special wand that is introduced under the skin to ultrasonically break-up the excess fat. The emulsified fat is then gently removed with suction. The result is a more even removal of the fat leaving a smoother contour with less bruising.

Liposuction is meant to remove unwanted pockets of fat. Although your specific area may seem like a lot, it usually is not enough to result in a noticeable difference on the scale. Liposuction is designed to slim and add definition so that you look better in clothes (less folds and bulges) or with your shirt off. It is not a weight loss treatment and it will not improve loose skin.

Liposuction does work at removing excess fat. However, if you continue to eat poorly without at least a little exercise, the remaining fat cells can increase in size, leaving you right back where you started.

The best candidates for liposuction are those with good diet and exercise habits, who just can’t seem to loose stubborn areas of fullness. Liposuction will remove the unwanted fat deposits, bringing you down to a new baseline.

Soreness is usually the most intense 2 to 4 days after liposuction and then decreases steadily. There may be some tenderness and soreness for up to 4 weeks, but this is typically very tolerable and does not inhibit your lifestyle.

There can be a lot of swelling with liposuction. Compression vests are typically worn for 4 weeks to help decrease the swelling and help with comfort. Activity (sports, working out, etc.) should be minimized for a two weeks, most guys are back to work in 4 – 7 days.
